Matter and energy 2

  • The Shad Dharshan are the six traditional systems of Indian philosophy; among them Vaisheshika is so close to the modern concept of Physics because it concerns of particles interactions and physical energies. Yoga and Samkhya are two other very important systems. In these systems the theme of Macrocosm and Microcosm plays a very significant role. It is expressed as a model of evolving consciousness. Non-material in nature, Consciousness expresses itself in an evolutionary hidden force active into matter. Purusha and Prakriti, matter and Spirit. The spirit, the hidden force, is the real observer of reality.

Prakriti is primordial matter, the big field of action and attributes, Prakriti has form, color, taste, qualities, endless energy. There is no matter without energy but there can be energy without matter. Samkhya says matter is creativity, the feminine energy, the divine mother. Prakriti is manifestation of energies, while Purusha is pure consciousness, action less, the witness. But why this is so important for the Ojas approach of energy?

Matter and Spirit, Prakriti and Purusha. The field and the knower of the field. The pulsation of the cosmic Prana causes Consciousness to break up into three universal qualities (Gunas), which pervade all creation and so forth matter. Sattva is harmony, perfect balance, light, spiritual purpose; Rajas is the principle of vital movement, excitability and continuous change; Tamas is inertia, confusion and darkness. In matter all these forces are operating eternally.
  • These three universal qualities influence both our minds and bodies. On the universal level Sattva is vast, clear space, pure harmonious information, and perfect coherent energy. Tamas is solid matter, substance what we usually see and then consider the only predominant aspect of reality!

Tamas brings sleep, inaction, heaviness, unconsciousness and confusion. Rajas is the active vital force in the body, which moves both the organic and inorganic universes. Sattva is creative potential (Brahma), Rajas is kinetic protective force (Vishnu) and Tamas is a potential destructive force (Mahesha or Shiva).
